Is Your Peptide Vendor Legit? How to Check Before You Buy

Peter gets the same message forty times a week: a screenshot of a vendor's website and three words — is this legit? For two years he guessed. Ross runs the lab that can actually answer it.

PeterI get the same message about forty times a week. Someone screenshots a vendor's website, sends it to me, and the whole message is three words. Is this legit?

RossAnd what do you tell them?

PeterHonestly? For about two years I guessed. I'd look at the site, see if it felt professional, check if anyone in my comments had heard of them, and go “yeah, looks fine to me.”

RossWhich is what almost everybody does.

PeterWhich is what everybody does. And I was wrong at least twice that I know about.

RossThere are a hundred and sixty-four different versions of that search happening every month. Same six words every time. Is — company name — legit.

PeterSo today we're actually going to answer it. Not for one vendor. For any of them.

RossWelcome to episode one of the Boren Health podcast.

PeterEpisode one. We should probably say who we are.

RossI'm Ross. I own Boren Health. What we do is buy peptides anonymously off the open market — same as any customer, no special treatment, nobody knows it's us — and send them to an independent lab. Then we publish whatever comes back.

PeterIncluding when it's bad.

RossEspecially when it's bad. That's the entire point. We don't sell peptides. There's no house brand I'm quietly steering you toward, because there isn't one.

PeterAnd I'm Peter. I make gym content — training, physique stuff, and a lot of peptides and looksmaxxing. Which basically means I'm the guy standing between a very large number of people and a very expensive mistake.

RossYou're the one they ask.

PeterI'm the one they ask. And I don't have a lab. So I've been asking Ross for about a year, and eventually we figured we should just hit record.

RossSo here's the show. Every episode we take one question people are genuinely searching for and answer it properly. Research where research exists, lab data where we have it, and an honest “we don't know” where that's the truth.

PeterNo affiliate links. Nobody's paying us to like them.

RossAnd today's question is the big one. How do you tell whether a peptide vendor is legit? We've got seven checks. You can run all seven in about ten minutes, before you spend a dollar.

PeterAnd I want to go through them as the guy who's been doing it wrong. Because I have been.

PeterStart with the part I didn't understand for the longest time. Who is actually checking this stuff?

RossNobody.

PeterSee, when you say it like that—

RossI mean it literally. Peptides in this market are sold as research chemicals. Not medicine, not supplements. Research chemicals is a category that exists precisely because it sits outside the rules covering medicine and supplements.

PeterSo nobody's inspecting anything.

RossNo one inspects the facility. No one verifies the label. If a vial says five milligrams of BPC-157, there is no agency anywhere on earth confirming it holds five milligrams, or BPC-157, or anything at all.

PeterThat's genuinely wild when you say it out loud.

RossAnd it means the only quality document in the whole chain is one the seller chose to show you, about a test the seller chose to pay for, on a sample the seller chose to send.

PeterI want to be fair though, because I don't want people hearing this and thinking every vendor's a crook. I've dealt with people in this space who are clearly doing it properly. Answering emails at midnight, sending replacements, all of it.

RossAgreed — and that's actually the problem. It isn't that everyone's lying. It's that the honest vendor and the dishonest vendor build the exact same website. Same product photos. Same lab logo in the footer. Same confident paragraph about purity standards.

PeterYou can't tell them apart by looking.

RossYou can't, and the market knows you can't. Now — there are two ways a vial goes wrong, and they fail differently. First one is underdosing. Right compound, less of it than the label says.

PeterAnd you blame the peptide.

RossEvery single time. You decide BPC-157 doesn't work, when what actually happened is you took a third of it.

PeterWhat's the second?

RossWrong compound entirely, or mostly filler. That's the one that can actually hurt you.

PeterOkay. Seven checks. Go.

PeterOne's yours.

RossCheck one. Is there a certificate of analysis, and does it correspond to the vial you're actually going to receive? A COA is the lab report for one specific production batch, and the word doing the work is specific.

PeterBatches are meaningfully different from each other?

RossSame manufacturer, same equipment, genuinely different results. Synthesis is a process, and processes drift.

PeterSo one COA sitting on a product page, no batch number on it—

Ross—could be a completely genuine report, from a genuinely excellent batch, that shipped fourteen months ago.

PeterWhat am I looking for instead?

RossA lot number on the report. A date. And that same number printed on the vial when it arrives at your door. If a vendor's COAs have no lot numbers at all, I'm not calling that fraud — but it's unverifiable by construction, and unverifiable is the whole thing we're trying to fix.

PeterCheck two.

RossWho paid for the test.

PeterAh.

RossThere's a real difference between a vendor testing its own product and an independent party testing it. In-house testing isn't worthless. But the vendor picks which sample goes to the lab, and which results get published.

PeterSend your best material, post the good report.

RossAnd ship something else.

PeterOkay, let me push on this one, because you own a company that does independent testing. So “you should trust independent testing” is a very convenient thing for you to say.

RossIt's completely convenient. It also happens to be true, and the good news is you don't have to take it from me. Look at whether the lab is named on the report. Real ones are — — and a named lab will generally confirm a report ID if you contact them yourself.

PeterSo I can verify it without going through you at all.

RossThat's the idea. Then check whether it's a properly formatted document from the lab or a cropped screenshot. And look for several reports over time, across batches — including ones that aren't perfect.

PeterWhy would I want to see a bad one?

RossBecause a vendor with a public history of mixed results is showing you their actual process. A vendor with nothing but flawless numbers is showing you their marketing.

PeterCheck three. And I want you to go slow here, because this is the one that changed how I buy, and I'd been doing this for years before you told me.

RossPurity and identity are two different questions, and almost everyone only ever checks the first one.

PeterBreak that down.

RossThe number everybody quotes is purity. Ninety-nine point two percent. That figure almost always comes from HPLC — high-performance liquid chromatography. What HPLC does is separate whatever's in the sample into its components and measure the proportions.

PeterSo ninety-nine percent pure means ninety-nine percent of what's in there is one single substance.

RossRight.

PeterBut not which substance.

RossNot which substance. HPLC tells you how consistent the material is. It does not tell you what the material is.

PeterI still can't get over that. I quoted purity numbers in videos for two years thinking it meant “this is definitely the real thing.”

RossAlmost everyone does. The test that answers identity is mass spectrometry — it measures molecular weight and confirms you're looking at the molecule on the label. A complete report has both.

PeterPurity from one, identity from the other.

RossAnd there's a third number worth knowing about — net peptide content. Your vial doesn't hold only peptide. There's a salt, and usually mannitol as a bulking agent. So a vial genuinely containing five milligrams of powder can hold noticeably less than five milligrams of actual peptide.

PeterAnd both of those things are technically true at the same time.

RossBoth true. Purity, identity, content. If a vendor only ever gives you the first one, you've got a third of the picture.

RossFour's yours.

PeterCheck four — does the price actually make sense? This one's crude and it's saved me the most money. Making a peptide costs money. The raw material is priced by the gram on a global market every vendor is buying from. Then somebody has to dissolve it, filter it, fill the vials, freeze-dry it, seal it, label it, keep it cold, ship it cold.

RossNone of which is free.

PeterSo there's a floor. Below a certain price the maths doesn't close, and somebody selling under it is doing one of three things. Underdosing, cutting it with filler, or not shipping at all.

RossI'll complicate that slightly, because I think you oversell it.

PeterGo on.

RossWe've seen legitimate vendors run genuine loss-leaders. Real product, priced below cost, to pull in first-time buyers.

PeterSure — on one product, for a week, with a code attached. What I'm describing is a whole catalogue sitting at forty percent of everyone else, permanently.

RossThat I'll agree with completely. A whole-catalogue discount isn't a promotion. It's a business model.

PeterSo pull up the same peptide, same vial size, across ten vendors, and find the middle. If somebody's sitting at forty percent of that, it's not a deal. It's information.

PeterCheck five. How do they want to be paid — and what happens if the box never turns up?

RossLeast technical check on the list.

PeterAnd maybe the most predictive, because it's really about what you can still do once the money's gone. Pay by card, you've got a chargeback. There's a third party who takes your call, and the vendor badly doesn't want disputes, because enough of them and they lose card processing entirely.

RossAnd crypto?

PeterGone. Crypto, peer-to-peer transfers, gift cards — those are final by design. No dispute process, nobody to call.

RossWorth the caveat that plenty of legitimate vendors take crypto, often because card processors won't touch this category at all.

PeterTotally — it's not a dealbreaker on its own. But crypto only, no card, no exceptions, tells you how much unwinding they've built into the relationship.

RossSo what's your rule?

PeterFirst order, buy small. Small enough that if it never shows up you're annoyed, not hurt.

PeterCheck six, and this one's awkward for me. Where do the reviews live, and who wrote them?

RossWhy awkward?

PeterBecause for a lot of people, I am the reviews. Look — reviews on a vendor's own website are marketing copy. Not necessarily fake, but they choose which ones go up.

RossSame structural problem as the self-commissioned lab report.

PeterIdentical problem wearing a different hat. Off-site is better, but a lot of independent-looking peptide content is affiliate content. The person reviewing it earns money when you buy.

RossWhich isn't automatically dishonest.

PeterNo, and disclosed properly it's completely fine. I've done affiliate deals and said so on camera. You just need to know the enthusiasm has a revenue model attached. And I'll say the other thing, because it's the honest version — I once made a genuinely excited video about a vendor who turned out to be reshipping someone else's product with their own label on it.

RossYou believed it at the time.

PeterA hundred percent believed it. So community threads are better, with two catches. Watch the timing — a pile of glowing posts from accounts created the same week is a campaign, not a consensus. And watch what's actually being reported. “Fast shipping, great communication” tells you they can run a warehouse.

RossIt tells you nothing about what's in the vial.

PeterNothing at all. The one that's worth everything is somebody who bought it, paid out of their own pocket to have it tested, and posted the report.

RossThat person has no incentive.

PeterOne of those beats a hundred of mine.

PeterCheck seven. How old is this company, and has it existed under another name?

RossDomain lookup.

PeterFifteen seconds, tells you when the site was registered. A store trading four years has survived four years of customers. A domain registered eleven weeks ago has no track record.

RossWhich doesn't make it bad.

PeterIt means you're the track record. The pattern I really watch for is rebranding. A vendor takes a hit — bad batch, a public failed test, a run of orders that never showed up — and they close and reopen under a new name.

RossSame supplier, same photos, new logo.

PeterSame site layout, clean review history. And the tells are cheap. Reverse image search a product photo. See whether the page looks like a company people were complaining about six months ago. Check whether the support email domain even matches the storefront.

PeterSo you've been doing this at scale for a while now. What do you actually find?

RossWe've tested products across vendors.

PeterDoes spending more actually get you better material?

PeterAnd all of it's public.

RossEvery vendor we've tested has a page, the lab reports are on it, and we say when a company passed — not only when it failed.

PeterRight — sixty-second version, for anyone sitting on a checkout page right now.

RossOne. Find a COA with a batch number on it, and check that number against your vial.

PeterTwo. Make sure an independent lab ran it, and that the lab is named.

RossThree. Look for identity, not just a purity percentage. Different questions.

PeterFour. Compare the price against the market middle. Way under is information.

RossFive. Pay with a card if you possibly can.

PeterSix. One person who posted their own lab report beats a hundred reviews. Including mine.

RossSeven. Check how old the company is, and what it used to be called.

PeterSeven for seven, you're fine.

RossThree fails, you already know.

    A certificate of analysis covers one production run. No lot number means you cannot tell which run — it could be a real report from an excellent batch that shipped fourteen months ago.

    The vendor picks which sample goes to the lab and which results get published. Look for a named lab you can contact yourself, and a history that includes imperfect results.

    A 99% purity figure from HPLC means 99% of the material is one substance — not which substance. Identity needs mass spectrometry. Net peptide content is a third number again.

    Raw material, filtration, filling, lyophilisation, cold storage and cold shipping all cost money. A whole catalogue permanently at 40% of market median is not a promotion, it is a business model.

    How do they make you pay? 8:59

    A card payment keeps a chargeback in your pocket. Crypto, peer-to-peer transfers and gift cards are final by design. Crypto is not disqualifying — crypto-only tells you something.

    On-site reviews are curated, and much independent-looking content is affiliate content. The one worth everything: a customer who paid out of pocket to test it and posted the report.

    A domain lookup takes fifteen seconds. Watch for rebrands — same supplier, same product photos, same site template, clean review history.
